Julia Fiona Roberts' parents are Walter Grady Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. Her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts, a farmer who was also the first Roberts to arrive in Atlanta. Early in his life the father of her mother became obsessed by the theater. When he was an undergraduate at Emory University, he performed on stage in a number of shows in Atlanta. He joined the Air Force in 1953. During his time stationed in Biloxi Mississippi, was cast in the military's production, which featured Betty Lou Bredemus who was part of the air force. In 1955, they got married and their child Eric Anthony was born. Walter as well as his spouse left the military in, when they enrolled Walter in Tulane University. In 1960 the family moved into Decatur Georgia where Walter began working with Atlanta's Academy Theater and the Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. Walter as well as Betty Lou produced a Saturday morning local television show for children named Bum Bum and His Buddies in 1964. It was a venture that they funded themselves. They also created the six-year Actors and Writers Workshop later the same year. In 1965, they welcomed two new children: Lelisa Billingsley and Julia Billingsley.
